Woods and Finishes
Hardwoods
Hardwoods vary in color and grain, this is part of their natual beauty. The
color will change with age and light exposure. We do our best to insure that
all four pieces of a frame are similar in appearance.
PRE-DRILL all holes!!! If you don't, the wood will split. We offer thumbnailing
for those who don't drill.
Wood Types
The last digit of the style number refers to the wood type:
0 = Bass or Poplar, our choice. This is the wood we use under painted, superblack
or leaf finishes.
1 = Ash: A blonde hardwood with an open grain similar to oak.
2 = Cherry: Special order only
3 = Walnut: A medium to dark brown color aging to rich golden brown.
4 = Maple: White color varies to beige with this tight grained hardwood.

Finishes
Each frame is custom finished to your specifications. Standard floater frames
are matte black inside. Let us know if you need something different.
Raw: This is sanded but not finished. You must apply finish
to it.
Basic: These finishes allow the grain of the wood to show
through. They are applied to ash, walnut and maple.
Urethane: The wood is sealed but not shiny. If you want it
shiny, please specify gloss.
Wash: A blend of paint and urethane is used to highlight the
wood grain, and seal the wood. Black and white are standard, but other colors
are possible, please specify.
Stain: The wood is stained before a urethane finish is applied.
Several colors are available, call for samples or we can match a color you supply.
 Super Black Finish
Superblack: (S'black) This is painted finish that does not
allow the woodgrain to show through. Black is standard, but you may choose the
color you want. (An extra paint charge may apply) We use bass or poplar as the
wood under this finish.
Leaf: We now offer metal and precious metal leaf. Metal is
available in gold, silver or copper. Precious metal leaf is available in sterling
silver or 22K gold. Leaf may be finished in a variety of ways:
Shiny: Metal leaf and sterling silver are sealed.
22K leaf may be sealed or not, this is your choice. Sealing offers protection,
not sealing provides a more lustrous finish. If you want it very shiny, we can
send it out for water gilding.
Antique: The leaf is covered with a wash or a stippled effect
in black or raw umber. This can be done on precious metal leaf, but looks essentially
the same on metal.
Rubbed: The leaf is rubbed off allowing more of the undercoat
to show through. Standard undercoat is red, please specify if black is desired.
